This database will serve you for years to come, and youโll reference it often.
Itโs a curated repository of all the best strategies we know of โ and itโll only grow over time as YOU implement and contribute your own ideas to it!
Watch the video on this page to learn how to use it and/or expand the sections below.
My 2 Requests For Youโฆ
1: Update me as you build lists & launch campaigns! โ If you find awesome sneaky strategies & tips, I can merge them into here for the good of all $200KFers
2: Tell me if anything needs updating! โ If you feel some ratings are wrong โ or you are struggling to figure out a pond โ let me know so that I can tweak it and/or roll out extra training as needed
Learn to Fish
Scraping & list-building tools change all the time, so I don't want to just walk you through ONE โ I want you to understand the framework to use ANY.
The value of this database is in helping you more easily find a good jumping-off point.
But long-term, keep an eye out for new tools moving forward to try out like 10 percent of the time โ you never know whatโs gonna crush!
And remember that no one database / list-building method contains all leads. Long-term, your strategy will likely involve rotating between lists from multiple lead sources!
So Iโd rather see you this database as an โidea sourceโ than some โholy grail.โ
- idea source = expansive
- holy grail = limiting & fixed
Core 4 Ingredients
When in this initial browsing stage, the core 4 ingredients from the DB that matter most are:
- ๐ Raw Leads
- ๐ช๏ธ List Narrowing
- ๐โ๐ฉ Free Personalization
- ๐ง Business Names
The other 3 (๐ฅ Emails, ๐ฅ Person Names, ๐ผ Job Titles) we can get later and at the same time as each other from Snov.io
Remember the Cheat Sheet
The "โTaco Ingredientโ Cheat Sheet" is a handy reference to see at a glance what "good" looks like for each ingredient
โBestโ is Variable
There's no one best list-building strategy; just best for you โ and there are many that are best for you ๐
Best for you = whichever is most suited towards your ICP with the taco database filters (local biz vs online, products vs services etc from DB) and EASIEST to get โgood enoughโ leads from
Start Here
Be sure to check out the presets if youโre unsure where to start
Some Ponds Are ANTI-Recommended
Note that we have items in here that we both recommend AND anti-recommend!
So if you hear of a new lead source and you find to see what Zach/Thomas thinks about it, check if itโs in here first before rolling with it ๐
Use The List-Building 201 Training
Be sure to follow the core training on how to use this as a part of your strategy from within the $200KF List-Building 201 module.
Quick View
When you do a Quick View in the database, youโll see more info at a glance, and then if you click into the full page for the database item, youโll be able to find more detailed reviews and step-by-step tutorials / deep dives where necessary.
Easy & Fast > Better
When in doubt, do what seems EASIEST!!!
Embrace Imperfection
You probably won't do a perfect job your first time, and that's perfectly find because you'll iterate and build more lists in the future even if you DO do a perfect job
โBest For Youโ Definition in Detail
Definition of โBest Leads For Youโ in detail:
- Has our ICP on it
- Easy to filter for our ICP, or would be pre-filtered
- Easy to acquire the data
- Has extra โbonus ingredientsโ beyond the raw lead
- Has enough leads for us, once taking into account ICP filtering (ideally at least 200)
- Has free personalization potential
Start Light & High-Level, Then Dive Deeper
Weโll be doing โtoe-dipโ explorations into several lead sources before rolling with them, so donโt sweat picking the perfect ones, just add 1-3 ideas into your ๐ฎ Campaign Planner to explore based on the โbestโ definition above
Quality AND Quantity
Remember that cold outreach is about quality AND quantity. You can make up for a lot with high enough volume, and there are freelancers who drive 6-figures even when they do most stuff wrong (e.g. using apollo for EVERYTHING, including emails).
So don't overly-focus on quality and forget about quantity, ease, and scale, because those are extremely important too.
How To Approach Expensive Ponds
Itโs common for people to buy a one-month subscription to expensive tools like Builtwith, then download an assload of leads, then cancel the subscription. As long as their pricing model supports it, this can get you a good Cost Per Lead (CPL) if youโre intentional about it and treat it as a one-off vs. a subscription.
Other thing I see: Legally, I would never condone this โ cough โ but Iโve heard of other people sometimes pooling subscriptions for expensive tools like Builtwith and coordinating about this in โ cough โ private community platforms โ cough โ where they split a one-month subscription, pull a bunch of lists, and then pause the account. Split 3 ways for 1 month, 3 freelancers could download tens of thousands of leads each for $165pp.
Why do you have โexplicitly anti recommendedโ items in here?
Usually we do it with more popular ones that arenโt actually super great, to illustrate that for you, vs. if we just left them off and you thought we didnโt know about them.
Or sometimes, e.g. in the case of Apollo, we do anti-recommend it in general, but it can be a fine place to start for your first campaign if you really want to and are feeling super lazy. (Just know that your conversion rates will suck so youโll need to run campaigns to very large lists โ like 5k leads+ โ to get any real traction)
Why do you have so many scraping approaches in here?
To give you ideas of different ways to scrape / different things to scrape for.
Most of them all rely on the same fundamental knowledge, but when it comes to scraping, the possibilities are literally endless and the bottleneck is your creativity. This is meant to help with that.
โThe best results we get are when we get leads from a really weird placeโ ๐ Quote from Thomas

- Pros
- When building your list from a directory, itโll be super targeted.
- Not many people are doing it, so not a lot of competition. Free personalization.
- Sometimes lots and lots of low-effort high quality leads (e.g. healthcare). There are directories for most industries and most locations.
- Cons
- Lead volume cap; you often canโt get loads of leads.
- Sometimes youโll only see the top 50 or 25 of the thousands of companies that are out there, if itโs a super-duper-niche directory.
- Not all niches have directories.

- Pros
- Filtering by website traffic and tech used.
- Zach likes it from a tinkering standpoint, since we can play with it a lot more for free than we can with Builtwith, in terms of seeing how filters affect list size.
- Cons
- Data markers available are not as extensive as Builtwith
- I havenโt run an actual campaign to a list of similarweb leads yet, so I canโt compare what the actual quality is at the end of the day compared to Builtwith.
- Even though their website says they have self-serve accounts around $150/mo, those accounts don't allow you to use it as a list-building tool. They're only for SEO insights or something like that. - Pros
- Convenient
- Easy to use
- Fast to use
- Good for if you're feeling overwhelmed at making a list strategy and just want one platform that "does everything for you"
- Good for if you just want to build a decent list ASAP
- Cons
- Enrichment here can be extremely expensive per lead. (Often >$1 Cost Per Lead (CPL), depending on your Ideal Client Profile (ICP) filtering strategy.)
- Over-dependence on Clay to "do everything for you" will cripple your ability to create list strategies on your own and may limit your long-term outreach success.
- NB: If you have more money than time and a high Client Lifetime Value (LTV), Clay could still be fine. $1 CPL with Thomas' benchmark metrics means probably a $200-300 Client Acquisition Cost (CAC), which is still not a lot of $, even if it's much more expensive than other options.

- Cons

- Pros
- Since they pull the lead data from LinkedIn, the data quality *should* be relatively good and consistent with LinkedIn (which I guess matters if you have LI-sized companies)
- Accurate technographic data.
- Great support.
- You can do a company search for free for unlimited leads downloaded!
- Cons
- Not as good for technology as something like Builtwith Seems to rely on LinkedIn sales navigator as a data source. So if youโre reaching out to a small niche, it probably wonโt be on Snov as a category, as the business categories seem to mirror LinkedIn sales navigator categories.
- I noticed some data quality issues for things like out-of-business businesses when testing with Similarweb โ many snov lead website URLs where the website doesn't exist anymore, etc.

- Can target by top-level domains, which can be handy for finding europe or aus companies e.g. โ.com.auโ domains etc.
- Can target by keyword
- Can stack technologies used, or keyword + technology
- Cons
- Wouldnโt generally use it over Builtwith since Builtwith has a lot more data and search capabilities, and isnโt really even that much more expensive. - Thaiane said maybe the data quality sucks when she played with it. She said there were some instances of company categories being incorrect (e.g. she wanted "healthcare" companies and "hospitality" ones were showing up) and there was some inaccurate info about decision-makers, e.g. showing the old CEO who'd been replaced several months ago as still the active CEO.

- Pros
- It uses real google maps data rather than a potentially outdated database of data
- Easy to use
- Doesnโt take long to compile the data since itโs already there
- Very cheap
- A lot of options. If youโre starting and donโt know what industry to choose, you have hella options to TEST. You can test so much
- Cons
- I wanted to target different types of businesses; my clients had different needs. One of my clients wanted to target ecomm but you couldnโt really. Used to be mostly about google maps
- Everyone has access to the same data

- What is it?Lead gen database thatโs primarily used for companies where you want to find their funding
- Pros
- Primarily used for companies where you want to find their funding. (You can filter by funding round)
- Been around for a long time.
- Cons
- Zach note: Doesnโt have loads of sites / businesses profiled on it. (e.g. uploaded 850 CrossFit sites and only 25 were matched to CB profiles)
- Poential data quality issues. Seems like they show you the good leads at first and then when you buy a list they often suck.
- Convo between Zach & Thaiane, RE Quality: Zach: "do you feel that CB is categorically bad enough that I should make notes on the taco db item about it maybe sucking? Or do you think that maybe you specifically got bad luck with it?" Tha: "I don't know about the other niches, but at least in my case, I'd say CB is quite bad, mostly regarding outdated info. And the filters don't work so well (or maybe their categorization). I'm trying to "save" my CB list now and don't start from scratch, but that's smth I'd love to know if I were starting the course."

- The more I use it, the more I like it. I primarily like it for lead ENRICHMENT vs. raw lead acquisition.

- Pros
- Great for generalized research and "googling"
- Really good way to get personalization data if you weren't able to find any "for free" from your other lead sources โ as long as you're careful!
- Cons
- Not good for hyper-specific information
- Can't actually look at company websites as far as I'm aware; only search result pages
- More expensive API credits than ChatGPT
- If you're not careful and test thoroughly, you might send emails with wrong, made-up-by-the-AI information that burns trust and wastes leads

- What is it?The easiest automation-driven approach to getting "Prospects" (a.k.a. name + email + job title) from Snov. See the main Snov page here in the taco ingredients DB for more info on Snov in general.
- Pros
- Super easy to run
- Doesn't require hiring a VA
- Cons
- Low list yields, depending on your niche and how often Snov can find "Prospects" for them (30-60% yield) As a result, you'll either need a VA to get the harder ones, or a large list going in where you can accept the low yield (at least at first โ can always have a VA get the hard ones for subsequent campaigns)

- Pros
- You can process huge amounts of data easily
- Not prone to human copy/paste errors, typos, etc
- Cons
- Doesn't have the flexibility or "lean-ness" of a VA following an SOP
- If you're cleaning personalization data attributes, it can take a while to get your ChatGPT prompts dialed in

- What is it?A scraper Zach had built that will scrape a webpage, convert it to markdown, and add it to a spreadsheet for you to analyze with ChatGPT or whatever later
- Pros
- Cheap (As low as $0.0002 CPL!)
- More reliable than other website -> markdown scrapers
- Wayyy more reliable than trying to get a page and parse it to markdown in a Make automation
- Easy
- Cons
- Not 100% perfect; sometimes it says a page has content but the content it got is "error page content" like a cloudflare block

If you've already scraped your leads' homepages into markdown, you can use a built-in google sheets formula to check the language of the page contents
At A Glance...
- What is it?If you've already scraped your leads' homepages into markdown, you can use a built-in google sheets formula to check the language of the page contents
- Pros
- If you can only work with clients whose websites are in a specific language (e.g. if you're an English-speaking copywriter you prob want to work with English-speaking websites)
- Cons
- Given that it relies on the scraper-tool's ability to reliably scrape the content and parse it into markdown โ AND google translate's ability to recognize the language of that markdown โ it may be less reliable than country-headquarter filtering or other audience geolocation filtering strategies.

At A Glance...
- Tool URLhttps://anymailfinder.com/
- What is it?A tool that allows you to tell it a job title you want it to find a contact for at a company, and it finds them for you.
- Pros
- Easy. Just say "executive level," "marketing," etc. and it'll go find contacts and verify their emails.
- Powerful โ It found me people from job titles that Snov didn't
- Cons
- You're restricted to their pre-defined job title "buckets" for the prospect-finding, so if you're looking for people outside the options they give you, you're kind of out of luck
- Doesn't seem to offer any granular control over the positions in the job title bucket
- Only returns one result I think, so what happens when a department might have two people holding your desired title....?
- The verifier is not amazing; Neil reported a 5% bounce rate on AMF leads that he didn't run through an additional verification pass with Smartlead's verifier
- The "fuzzy match" behind the buckets is maybe not awesome sometimes. Thaiane reported many managers etc. getting bucketed into the "Marketing" role.
